Casey Clemens 7/24/2023 6:31 AMOver the weekend, we cleaned up a good chunk of our basement/garage. The previous owners had put an old door on top of an old cabinet and a table, and used that as a workspace - which I also adopted. But, it was getting to be too dangerous and inconvenient to work on top of an old door that was just placed on top of those two surfaces - so we ended up needing to get a new workspace. Rather than buying new tool cabinets, though, we just got a new worktable and have again repurposed the old cabinet as a tool cabinet, and the other table as a potting area! Everything else that was left behind that we don't need will be posted on Facebook for free to see if anyone else could use them for repurposing, crafts, etc, instead of putting them out as trash.-
Michael O'Neil 7/24/2023 10:15 AMNice! Sometimes the temptation to just toss stuff can be hard to resist. I made a table last summer out of an old door, pipes, cardboard, and a floatie my dog had ripped up. Frankentable, but with a tablecloth no one will ever know. -
Debbie Cravey 7/24/2023 6:41 AMThere's something about a potting area that just wants to be made of recycled materials. Such a great re-use of the old table. We also did some garage cleaning over the weekend and found a few nearly-new items to donate. It always feels great to make more space and feel less encumbered by "stuff."

Casey Clemens 7/20/2023 4:20 AMTalking about a different type of gardening today! Here is my freshly planted native flowering garden - they are still babies! I can't wait to expand these beds to take up more of my lawn, which doesn't do much for the ecosystem. When planning to transition these to native beds, I learned about wild ginger, which is a lot of the ground cover here. I was so happy to leave it in and hope we can spread it to take over a lot of our grass too! I also learned that mint next to roses can help keep bugs away from the roses. It's really cool that they have been in this bed for years, I wonder who planted them here and if they knew the benefits of them.-
Caroline Gorno 7/20/2023 12:49 PMNative plants are such an awesome way to turn a yard into a thriving ecosystem! Thanks for sharing! -

Casey Clemens 7/19/2023 4:20 AMI knew we weren't going to have enough time this growing season to build beds and make a full garden (that's definitely the plan for the future) so to make sure we could still grow some of our own produce this year, we found these big planters in the basement from the previous owners and planted as many tomato and pepper plants as we could with them. I'm glad they are happy!-
Debbie Cravey 7/19/2023 4:53 AMThey look delicious! I've lived in places where container gardening was my only option, and there are definitely some advantages (like being able to move them into better sun or shade when needed!)

Casey Clemens 7/18/2023 1:45 PMI spent some time this afternoon reading "In my day, you were butch or you were femme" from Vox, suggested under the Ecochallenge resources. It was a very interesting perspective that I had not considered before: "Left out of the conversation is how older nonbinary people, many with already established lives, are navigating an increasingly accepting world." The portraits are beautiful and you can feel everyone's soul in their stories. I highly recommend this read for anyone completing the trans/femme educational component!

Casey Clemens 7/18/2023 5:16 AMWe have so many serrano peppers growing on our plant, it is weighing the plant down! I spent some time looking into recipes we can make and in addition to my normal pickling of hot peppers, I think I am going to try to make fermented hot sauce with some! I love finding ways to make the produce that we get from the plants last much longer for different meals. -

Casey Clemens 7/15/2023 4:09 AMI think I would like to continue this practice! When I started birdwatching, it really helped me to slow down and be mindful of what was around me, but I still largely focus on walking and looking for birds. Nature journaling could help me slow down to look for other amazing things, too, and be a creative outlet! -

Debbie Cravey 7/13/2023 5:46 AMThis is awesome! Do you think you'll make this a regular activity back home? I want to try this. (Though I don't know if my drawings would look as good, lol)

Casey Clemens 7/11/2023 6:35 AMA powerful reminder of how sustainability and conservation cannot exist without compassion for those who live here too! There are many voices that need to be heard and amplified to make lasting change. -
Casey Clemens 7/10/2023 9:11 AMI spent some time today learning about my water footprint and local water issues. I hadn't thought to check my faucets, showerhead, toilet, etc to see if they were low-flow, but now I realize how important it is to know that and make adjustments to them if needed!
