Raia Meister 7/18/2023 6:27 AMI live in an area of the country that used to have a strong Cherokee presence. In addition to the Cherokee, the Catawba tribe would travel up and down the Catawba River and had a strong trade alliance with the Cherokee- particularly in craft- and the arts of both tribes now reflect the intersectionality of these two cultures mingling. The Catawba were accomplished potters, and the Cherokee were accomplished bead smiths and weavers. The trade alliance between the two tribes resulted in the exchange of numerous traditions- artistic and otherwise- and now the Cherokee have adopted many of the ceramic traditions of the Catawba, and the Catawba expanded their textile production. Fun fact: in grad school I got a scholarship to work with the Catawba to create culturally responsive art projects for fourth graders! It was a blast! -
